The "Big" Mustangs, made from 1971-'73, very rarely get the respect and admiration that their elder siblings routinely receive. But we're finally seeing that change, and it's about time! After all, Ford persevered with high compression for the '71 model year and kept developing legitimate performance packages even in the face of the muscle car's impending demise. Now that 1971-'73 Mustangs, and in particular, Mach 1s, are turning up in restored form at car shows across the US and indeed, Australia, with some regularity, it seems that more and more enthusiasts are being reminded of how appealing these cars were when new. And now, values are escalating accordingly. 1971 was to be the last restyling for the first generation Mustang. Introduced late in August of 1970, the new Mustang was more than two inches longer and almost two and a half inches wider than its 1970 predecessor. For the first time since the Mustang's inception, the wheelbase was extended one inch to 109 inches. One of the most recognizable features of the '71-'73 Mustangs is the optional (standard on Boss 351) NACA (the "National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics", which in 1958 became NASA) hood with dual scoops. Though available as a visual, non-functional item, they could be made fully functional on models ordered with the Ram Air option, which included vacuum controlled 'flappers' at each scoop, and a fiberglass under-hood 'plenum' that directed cool, outside air into carburator. The ram-air option included a two-tone hood paint treatment in either 'matte black' or 'argent' (matte silver), co-ordinated to the colour of the Mach 1 decals and striping. In addition, all Ram Air-equipped Mustangs of this generation came equipped with twist-style, chrome-plated hood lock pins. The 1971 M code version of the 351 Cleveland motor was rated at 285hp (approx.210kW - 370 lbft ) with a high (10.7:1) compression, 4V configuration employing closed-chamber head design and hydraulic lifters. This engine was dropped from the Mustang line up for the '72 year. Of the total 149,678 Mustangs built in 1971, only 36,499 were Mach 1s. DETAILS: Exterior: The flawless paintwork finish is the direct result of having the entire car completely disassembled, stripped to bare metal, carefully prepped, then painted in the factory original Grabber Yellow with the two-tone hood treatment in matte black, and clear coated. The fit and finish is excellent, all body trim and chrome bumpers are in like new condition. The undercarriage was also fully detailed during the restoration. Interior: Like the exterior, the interior underwent a full restoration. The Mach 1 sports interior, which includes knitted vinyl seats, deluxe two spoke steering wheel, moulded door panels, black dash panel with wood grained centre instruments group panel, electric clock, rear ash trays, and colour matched front rubber floor mats sewn to the carpet are almost like new. It also has the factory optioned fold down rear seat. Engine and Driveline: With the ground up restoration, the M-code 251 Cleveland Engine was rebuilt along with the factory original Ram Air option. Receipts for all work performed on the engine are included. The engine is fitted with Ford's Autolite carburator, wide ratio 4 Speed Manual Transmission, 3.50 Traction Lock rear axle with all original numbers matching factory drive train. Since new, this wonderful Mustang has done an extremely low 23,000 miles Wheels and Tires: Original wheels, caps and trim rings, with wide black sidewall tyres with raised white letters.
