 This car has been subject to an extensive amount of restoration work. Treated to a good quality repaint about a year ago in the original white colour, the car shows well with good luster and depth of shine. Chrome is good and wheels are scuff free. The Engine bay, trunk and underside are all very tidy. The black leather interior is in good shape with no cracks on the dash and Zebrano wood veneer in generally good condition, while some parts are excellent. Carpets and headliner are excellent throughout. It is fitted with an aftermarket AC system and Becker Europa radio. Mercedes-Benz's 3.5-liter V8 engine debuted in the 280SE Coup/Cabriolet and 300SEL saloon in 1969. An over-square design featuring a cast-iron block and aluminium-alloy cylinder heads, each equipped with a single overhead camshaft, the all-new power unit produced 200bhp courtesy of Bosch electronic fuel injection and transistorised ignition. Thus equipped, the Coup and Cabriolet were good for 125mph, with 60mph reachable in 9.5 seconds, a substantial improvement on the six-cylinder versions' figures. Although the SEL saloon used the 'New Generation' bodyshell, the Coup and Cabriolet kept the elegant coachwork which had debuted back in 1959 on the 220SE and, as befitted top-of-the-range luxury models, came equipped with automatic transmission, power windows and Becker radio as standard. Sadly, the 280SE 3.5 was to be the final model to feature this long-established body style, and today these last-of-the-line classics are much sought after. Mechanically, this car is in excellent condition, having just spent $1,600 servicing the car including a brake overhaul. It starts easily from cold with no smoke from the tail pipe, and the engine is very responsive with the power of a modern car. Shifting is smooth through all gears. Steering is very good with no play, brakes are excellent and the suspension feels taut with no squeaks or rattles. All electrical systems work perfectly, including the electric windows.
